Sailing
With the Mediterranean as your playground and plenty of heavenly breezes to catch a lift on, sailing is a highlight of life in Alicante. Numerous yacht clubs in and around Alicante provide everything from lessons in dinghies to chartered cruises in large yachts.
- Real Club de Regatas de Alicante: It has a sailing school and is a good place to contact if you're into racing.
- Club Náutico Alicante Costa Blanca: One of the Mediterranean Sailing School centres, this club offers introductory and advanced light sailing courses.
- Escuela Mediterránea de Vela: This is a quality club that offers lessons to get you started in the world of dinghy sailing. Or if you're already good and just want to hone your skills, sign up for one of their advanced courses.
- Imía: The International Maritime Institute of Alicante (IMIA) is associated with the Real Club de Regattas, and offers sailing lessons for everyone aged 8 and up. It's part of the University of Alicante.
- Cenáutica: If you're looking for a charter company to organise a charter, whether one a day, weekend or week, this company is perfect. They also offer course to obtain sailing certifications.
- Academia Náutica Velalcant: This company offers sailing classes and certification courses. They also charter sailboats, both crewed and uncrewed.
- Academia Náutica a la Mar: Based out of Real Club de Regatas, this company organises weekend sailing courses (for groups too).
Windsurfing, Canoeing, Rowing, Kitesurfing and Jet Skiing
The Escuela Mediterránea de Vela is a quality outfit that teaches windsurfing and the highflying art of kitesurfing, while Imía: The International Maritime Institute of Alicante (IMIA) is associated with the Real Club de Regattas, and offers sailing lessons for everyone aged 8 and up. Golf
We feel truly sorry for your handicap - a life in Alicante will tear it to shreds! There are nine courses within close proximity to the city: Alicante Golf Club (designed by Seve Ballesteros), Alenda Golf, Bonalba, El Bosque, El Plantío, El Saler Golf Club, Mediterraneo Golf Club and Oliva Nova. If you fell like a bit of a drive (40km by car), you'll have access to the celebrated La Finca Algorfa Golf, one of Spain's most renowned courses.
Bowls
What would life be without bowls? Thankfully you won't have to find out! There are almost a dozen bowls clubs along the Costa Blanca coast between the expat strongholds of Benidorm and Torrevieja. There are none in the city of Alicante itself, but a short drive will get you to your soon to be favourite green.
Scuba Diving
The Escuela Mediterránea de Buceo (the Mediterranean School of Scuba Diving) offers world of underwater exploration. Scuba lessons are available as is a large range of scuba equipment (new and used) in their shop. Dives are organised to the Island of Tabarca, the Bay of Alicante and other interesting spots on the sea floor. Imía (International Maritime Institute of Alicante) also offers diving lessons for everyone who's older than 8!
Sports Centres
The Parque Deportivo Tossal in town has everything you'd want in a sports complex: swimming pool, gymnasium centre and so so so much more. The nearby University of Alicante and the village of San Vicente also have a great range of facilities. There are tennis courts (clay and hard court), a great swimming pool, basketball courts, petanca areas and numerous other sporting venues.
Sierra Aitana
These mountains are about an hour north of Alicante and offer some of the most underrated hikes in eastern Spain. Follow traditional footpaths along ridge lines, stare out over dramatic Mediterranean panoramas, visit remote mountain villages and limestone amphitheatres, and thank your lucky stars you live this close to paradise.
