Shops and Services in Alicante, Alicante
- Travel tip: The emergency number in Spain is three digit code: 112
- Fact: The E111 is now being phased out, so plan ahead and replace yours with the new European Health Insurance Card
Alicante is the most cosmopolitan city on the Mediterranean south of Valencia and its list of shops and services is endless. Peruse some of Europe's big-name boutiques or sink into the two massive El Corte Inglés department stores.
Or, if you want a real taste of the culture, dive into the massive street market held each Thursday and Saturday. What will it be... ceramics from Agost, rugs from Crevillente, bags and baskets from Gata de Gorgos or leather shoes from Elda? There are a plethora of items and the prices won't make your wallet wince - bargains galore!
Plaza de Quijano in El Barrio now also hosts an arts and crafts market two Sundays a month. Local artisans sell their wares, which include great pottery and ceramics, two crafts Alicante is renowned for. There are also activities for children to learn about Alicante's traditional arts.
When shopping for fresh meat and vegetables, there's no better place to venture than Alicante's huge, Art Nouveau two-storey market. There are also plenty of supermarkets, many of which that carry some of your favourite goodies from home.
Staying Healthy
Spain's healthcare system is one of Europe's best. Most Spaniards can expect to see their GP within one day of booking.
Like the NHS, healthcare is free to all citizens. So visitors that bring their European Health Insurance Card or E111 can be assured of fast, free attention whenever it’s needed.
For minor complaints, Spanish pharmacies (Farmacias) are excellent and many medicines that require a prescription at home can be bought over the counter here. Look out for the flashing green cross outside the store.
For more serious health issues, visit Hospital de Alicante (96 593 83 00) or one of the many private clinics around town.
Just jumping out of the fast lane in the UK for a laid back life in Spain will do wonders for your health. Why not consider making Spain your home? After all, how many chances do you get to enjoy life?
